Italian federation officials met with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola in person to talk about taking over from Roberto Mancini as national team coach.
The meeting included technical staff such as board members Paolo Maldini and Leonardo.
Despite persistent English media speculation concerning a Premier League return, Guardiola apparently showed little personal desire for the role.
He earlier indicated his reluctance to take on the job against reports of interest from Italy.
Currently, no decision has been made about the managerial position.
